We are saddened by the loss of our Papaw, but grateful for the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind. He was the leader of our family, the example we all looked to, and the man who taught us what hard work, integrity, and perseverance truly mean.
He built the family business into what it is today through determination, sacrifice, and a commitment to doing things the right way. Starting with very little to nothing, he worked with old worn-out tractors, trucks, and whatever equipment he could keep running, often making do with what he had instead of what he needed. Through grit, long hours, and an unwavering work ethic, he slowly built something that would provide opportunities and a future for generations to come. Everything we have and enjoy today is rooted in the sacrifices he made and the foundation he built.
He also built a very successful registered Brahman operation and served on the Board of Directors for the International Brahman Assoc, planting the seed for a passion that would eventually become a major part of my own life.
His accomplishments extended far beyond business. He served our community as a Constable and Commissioner for a combined 22 years, always believing in service, responsibility, and helping others.
But as much as he cared about his work, his community, and everything he built, nothing meant more to Papaw than his family. He loved us more than anything in this world, and we always knew it. He worried about all of us no matter how old we were, where we were, or what we were doing, and he always wanted the very best for each of us. His love for his family was constant, protective, and unconditional, and it was something we never had to question because we felt it every day.
What I will remember most about him was the way he carried himself everyday. He came from a generation where a man's word meant something. A handshake was a contract. Your reputation was earned through your actions, and character mattered more than anything money could buy. He built the Hicks name on those values, and that foundation is still standing strong today.
The lessons he taught me cannot be measured. Through his example, he showed me how to work hard, how to treat people with respect, how to honor commitments, and how to build something worth leaving behind. Those lessons will stay with me for the rest of my life.
While it is difficult to imagine this family without him, his legacy will live on through all of us. I can only hope to carry forward the values, work ethic, and standards he set, and make him proud in the years ahead.
The greatest measure of a man's life isn't what he leaves behind for his family, it's what he leaves within them. Papaw leaves us with a legacy that will last for generations.
Thank you, Papaw, for everything you built, everything you taught, and everything you gave to this family. We are who we are because of you. The opportunities we have, the values we hold, and the life we've been blessed with all trace back to your hard work and sacrifice. We will carry your legacy forward and do our best to make you proud.
